It has been a busy two weeks for the Thunder Hockey U16 team, both on and off-the ice as they get ready for the National Championships this weekend.
The Thunder advanced with a 4-2 win over the Florida Panther Alliance in the finals of the Southeast District tournament last week in Huntsville, Alabama. Earlier in the tournament the Thunder had victories over the Southern Flyers (3-1), Washington Little Caps (6-1) and Carolina Jr. Hurricanes (6-3). Their only loss of the weekend came in their second game – a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Florida Everblades.
Thunder will have its hands full this weekend as the Nationals start Wednesday afternoon in St. Louis. Thunder starts the tournament against Shattuck St. Mary’s, followed by a game Thursday against Team Wisconsin and Friday against Team Comcast. The finals are set for Sunday morning.
The Thunder U16 roster is comprised of Elite Edge Hockey Showcase graduates, as the team used last years program as a development weekend in its summer training.
Off the ice several Thunder players (and Elite Edge Hockey Showcase participants) have been named to the USHL Draft List. Teemu Tiitinen, Jan Kaminsky and Michael Lant have been named to the 1992 list, while Jordan Cosby, Corey Hucker, Dylan Shamburger, Perry Holcombe and Jay Williams have been named to the 1993 list. Alumni Alex Larsen (Indiana Ice) was also on the 1992 list.
The USHL Central Scouting service forms a draft list each year in various age divisions for its member teams to reference in their scouting efforts each year. Elite Edge Hockey Showcase congratulates all past and current players on being selected to this prestigious list.

ELITE EDGE HOCKEY SHOWCASE (June 11-14, 2009 – A-Game Sports, Franklin, TN) – NEWSLETTER #3
It has been a new location, but one of the Elite Edge Hockey Showcase’s most popular coaches is enjoying his usual amount of team success this season.
Leigh Mendelson and the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League have continued where they left off last season – winning their way through the US Division and setting themselves up for what could be a long playoff run. Mendelson joined the team this summer after their 2008 Memorial Cup winning campaign. He was no stranger to hoisting trophies last year though – as he was an assistant coach with the USHL champion Omaha Lancers.
“I have been very fortunate the past two seasons working with a couple top organizations,” said Mendelson. “It has been fun being part of the success of each and I hope it continues through the playoffs this year.”
Mendelson will be visiting the Elite Edge Hockey Showcase for his third season this June. His coaching resume of professional, junior, midget and European hockey makes him a great reference for all players as they map out their hockey futures.
“Leigh has been around and seen all levels,” said Elite Edge program director Brandon Walker. “He is very popular with the players and we are thrilled to have him back this season.”

ELITE EDGE HOCKEY SHOWCASE (June 11-14, 2009 – A-Game Sports, Franklin, TN) – NEWSLETTER #2
The Elite Edge Hockey Showcase is pleased to congratulate one of its most popular coaches on achieving a spot on hockey’s most prestigious list.
Joe Birch, Director of Recruitment and Education Services for the Ontario Hockey League – and a coach at Elite Edge the past three seasons – is featured as #94 on list of the 100 most influential people in hockey from The Hockey News. The list includes NHL, international, college and junior hockey movers and shakers along with people from the sports league offices, broadcast divisions and equipment manufacturers. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is listed at the number-one most influential person this year.
“To be included in a list of people like that is really something,” said Birch. “Obviously it is very nice to be recognized for my work with the Ontario Hockey League. It is great to draw attention to the benefits of our league and the positive experience it can be for young players from throughout North America.”
As an Elite Edge coach for the past three seasons, Birch has worked behind the bench of a camp team each year and has also done a presentation each year for players and parents. As a graduate from playing major junior hockey he has a keen sense of what decisions players are faced with as they mature from minor to junior hockey players.
“Joe is one of our most popular coaches in the program because of his knowledge, enthusiasm and willingness to help players answer questions they have about their future,” said Brandon Walker, Elite Edge program director. “Every year I am blown away by the amount of energy he puts into every presentation to the players and parents and how much he wants to help them. He is a huge part of our program and deserves this great recognition.”
In his role with the OHL Birch has worked closely with players and parents to educate them on the educational opportunities and scholarships available to players – even those who participate in Canadian major junior hockey.
